Important ideas about standards

Students learn in different ways and at different rates. Each student takes a different pathway. It is likely that within a class, students will be working across a range of levels and that each student will be working across a range of levels. The task of teachers is to use their formal and informal assessments over the semester and to make an on balance judgment in order to report the extent to which a student is on track.

When teachers assess with the standard in mind, they monitor the extent to which a student is working towards the standard.

In 2007 the CEOM worked with twenty-two schools in the Archdiocese to identify standards at each level of primary schooling. The key ideas that underpin these standards are explained in the text 'Coming to Know, Worship and Love'.

In levels 1-4 (Years P - 6) there is one RE standard for each VELS level. Each standard has four elements:

  • Sacred story
  • Sign and symbol
  • Ritual
  • Living

LEVEL 1 - STANDARD (PREP)

LEVEL 2 - STANDARD (YEARS 1 & 2)

LEVEL 3 - STANDARD (YEARS 3 & 4)

LEVEL 4 - STANDARD (YEARS 5 & 6)
